STRANGE PROPELLER SETUP - FAIREY GANNET
The reason that the Gannet had the twin prop arrangement shown was because the turboprop engine fitted developed such an enormous amount of torque that the aircraft was almost impossible to keep in a straight line during take off (not a desirable feature in a carrierborne aircraft!), but by having two counterrotating propellors the torque cancels itself out.The same idea was tried on late Mark Spitfires and I believe there were some experimental p47s and p51s that tried out the concept along with another little known british aircraft the Martin Baker MB5.
